The new untitled Mindy Kaling series, first revealed in June 2021 as an LA Lakers production, has finally completed its principal cast of nine members.
David Stassen has agreed to show-run the new series about a newly appointed president of a prestigious basketball team in LA.
Mindy Kaling will oversee the 10-episode first season of the show, part of her overall arrangement with Warner Bros. Television, alongside writers Ike Barinholtz and Stassen.
Filming for the 10-episode series starts in Los Angeles next week, on February 26th, 2024. The production will span three months, concluding on May 22nd, 2024. Its premiere in 2024 remains undecided; it wasn’t part of Netflix’s lineup of 90+ series this year.
The first significant casting announcement for the series was made in late January 2024, with Kate Hudson taking the lead role.
Hudson, known for roles in “Almost Famous” and “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” will play Isla Gordon and serve as an executive producer. Isla, portrayed as “overlooked and underappreciated,” becomes President of the Los Angeles Waves, proving her value to the family business.
On February 1st, Netflix announced three new cast members:
- Brenda Song (Dollface, Secret Obsession) Brenda Song will play Ali Lee, the Waves’ Chief of Staff, and Isla Gordon’s closest ally after attending college together.
- Scott MacArthur (The Mick, The Righteous Gemstones) portrays the second sibling, Ness Gordon. Ness is the Waves’ general manager and a former player who burned out after one season in the pros but continues to strive for success in the front office.
- Drew Tarver (The Other Two, Unfrosted) will play one of Isla’s two brothers, Sandy. Sandy is the Waves’ chief financial officer. He believes he is the most intelligent person in the room but needs to be more athletic and better in sports. Like Islan, he believes he has been estranged from his family his entire life.
On February 21st, Netflix augmented the cast with five new members:
Roberto Sanchez (Queen of the South, BMF) is the first new cast member announced. He’ll play Stephen Ramirez, the imposing board member loyal to the Waves alongside the Gordons.
Fabrizio Guido (Good Burger 2, Mr. Iglesias) portrays Jackie Moreno, a popcorn vendor at the stadium where the Waves play. After a sudden change, he can work his way up the organization’s hierarchy, starting with his favorite team.
Chet Hanks (Your Honor, Shameless) Chet Hanks plays Travis Bugg, the Waves’ point guard who moonlights as an unsuccessful rapper. He’s a major distraction on the court and an even more significant issue for Isla off it.”
Toby Sandeman (Power Book III: Raising Kanan, The Game) will play the Waves’ top player, Marcus Winfield. Marcus, described as a generational talent, remains one of the league’s greatest players. But Marcus has mentally checked out of the Waves, which could jeopardize the team’s prospects.
Keyla Monterroso Mejia (Curb Your Enthusiasm, Abbott Elementary) will play Ana Moreno, Jackie’s cousin (Guido) and a personal injury attorney.
